During steam boiler operation, water is heated and evaporated to produce steam. Dissolved solids remain in the water phase, increasing their concentration. At the same time, the higher energy required to evaporate the water increases energy consumption. To prevent scaling and keep energy consumption under control, water is discharged from the boiler and replaced with feedwater. This process is called blowdown. The blowdown rate is determined based on the dissolved solids content, operating conditions and boiler design.
